Hi, my name is Buffy Kaufman. I am a Southern California Artist, Instructor, Brand Ambassador for Daniel Smith Watercolors and Signature Member of Louisiana Watercolor Society. I'm inspired by color and artistic wanders in the desert, mountains, and coastline. Saunders Waterford High White Rough Watercolor Paper - 👍🏻 or 👎🏻 ?!?
I have always wondered what raw sienna/yellow ochre were good for and the difference. Thankyou! I think I have pbr6 as a Naples yellow and it’s very granulating…. 😎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Would love to hear if it works for a band of yellow in the sky too? Happy painting 💛💛💛💛
So beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful painting! Thanks for sharing your experience working on Aquabord! We have a few points that may help: 1)flushing the surface works best for paining in broad areas. It isn’t as necessary for smaller areas of details. If you flush the surface, you need to keep adding water and wait until the bubbles stop rising. Don’t let the surface dry again (use while damp) or more air will enter the surface. 2)the erasers that work best are the white, vinyl erasers 3)the amount of blooms/blossoming of the paint depends on the amount of water. You get the most control on Aquabord with less water than on paper 4)the best brushes for Aquabord are natural hair (squirrel or synthetic mix) which hold some water in the bristles. Stiff, synthetic brushes work best for lifting color. While paint can be lifted. We don’t recommend scrubbing the surface clean since you could smooth the surface. If washing a painting off, blot at the surface with wet paper towels. Thanks again!
@@AmpersandArt so draw first then wet?
Thank you! I have pinned this comment for viewers. Looking forward to my next painting on Aquabord, I purchased the larger 18" x 24" cradled - excited to apply what I have learned so far. 😍🤩
@@pamelaburns1081 Yes. You don’t need any water to draw on the surface.
My boards have arrived any further tips, opinions, advice?
I had heard that too. So I planned for it.
Ampersand just added some pointers, I pinned their comment to the top of the comments section
These gorgeous mixes were extra special made with quin magenta . I didn’t realize just how many different tones can be created . Your painting is stunning. I’m a beginner so I am learning so much from you 😊.
Thank you so much!
Wow such gorgeous mixes 😊.
Buffy: nice job! Love your painting. Thanks for showing the photo AND your nifty palette. So much more interesting when there’s lots to see. It might be nice to see the granulation up close in a couple of screens, and see how it moves. I think you have had at least 3 vids last week, and all of them fun & informative. Thank you. SARA
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes please more on siennas and ochres, my favorites! I've been planning to buy RS Lt for quite awhile so was happy to find this video, thanks
More to come!
Thanks for this video ❤. You introduced me to Daniel Smith Raw Sienna Light. Now I'm definitely getting Mars Yellow 😄. Love them both. I think RSL will serve best for a soft delicate touch, and the Mars Yellow gives a similar colour payoff, but with a punchier and higher tinting strength. Thank you 💛💛🧡🧡💛💛
Hope you enjoy it! Really like that color and your description is perfect
❤
These videos are so useful and informative. Love them! I would be interested in your suggestion to discuss further, natural pigments and synthetic pigments of the same or similar colour family. I hope that is clear …..mmmmm about as clear as my muddy art😊 Thank you always a pleasure to watch and learn.
Will do! 😉😉😉
Interesting mixes. Raw Sienna light is Py42 but it doesn’t turn a blue sky green? Love the rain sound effects.
Hi Sue! Thank you for watching
I wait IMpatiently for the next one! ❤
Love this series!
First time coming to your channel. this was very educational I am off to go buy this colour now it’s probably the only colour I do not own. I paint very wet also and this yellow will work wonders thanks so much you got a sub from me 🥰
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do 🩵💛
Love this swatching series. Just ordered paint colors from your card:) Will this series remain posted on you tube? 🤞 I am so looking forward to trying them all.
Yes the Swatch and Scape series will remain available 😍♥️😍
Fantastic! Thank you so much for all that you share.❤😊
Lovely sketchbook paintings!
Thank you so much 😀
I really enjoy your swatching videos! Thank you for telling us we need to use more of it when mixing, I probably would have thought I was doing something wrong haha. I was intrigued with the lunar blue and prussian green combo. Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching
Oh I would love a deep dive video on the natural vs synthetics etc etc. ok you are gonna think this is weird but I swear your nail polish is my fav Zoya Zanna🤣
Thank you for watching! Oooh I will have to look Zoya up, do you like it, does it last? Please excuse the chips, this polish only lasts a week, it’s the Sally Hansen Color Therapy “Eiffel in Love” 🩷
@@watercolorpour I like it because it has no formaldehyde is a bit healthier. Ha ha I have the same chips too
@@Gypsisoul1111I used to use the Static Nails - but lately they have been out of all the nude/soft colors, will look into Zoya, thank you so much! 🩷
I have heard you talk about Raw Sienna Light in a few of your videos and I love this deep dive into it…what an amazing color it is! My favorite mix was it with bronzite (one of my favorites) and Q. magenta (?). The subtle color shifts…wow! Now I have to order some raw sienna light and incorporate it into some paintings. I love this series you are doing…introduces me to so many painting possibilities! Thank you.😊
Thank you for watching, it is a great color and fun mixer
Love your color mixing videos - please continue!
I have the same dilemma with camera focus , I've shot a whole video out of focus ...you can get a separate video screen which is way bigger . I bought one just havn't figured how to hook it up . haha ...love your channel .♥
what?! wow, thank you SO much for sharing - I will be googling after this video, do you know the name of it? - THANK YOU so much
Still waiting for my clay board. Everyone was out
I am waiting on a order as well, ordered a larger cradled one to try

Hi Buffy, My name is Linda. Im thinking of getting the Otto Stretcher. Paper buckling is a challenge. 😮 I have seen several of your videos and noticed you have taped your paper to a board abd used the Otto Stretcher. Which method do you perfer: tapping or the Otto Strectcher? Thank you for your videos they are amazing!
Hi Linda, thank you for writing, the Otto Stretcher for larger paintings and if its 11 x 14 or smaller I just tape. The Otto stretcher is best but I paint so often I tend to tape whenever I can. The Otto just takes a little longer, but is worth it and is so nice to paint on a flat surface. Additionally I tried the 200 pound paper by Saunders Waterford (found it at Jacksons) and it warps a lot less than the 140 pound. Hope this helps
Thank you for the quick answer Buffy! Very helpful advice. I will also try the 200 lb paper you suggested. 😊
Thanks for sharing your palette! I have the DS Quin Red. I love it. .Prussian Green is an interesting color made with 2 pigments. PB27-Prussian Blue and PY35-Cadmium Yellow. Only the PB27 could fade but not every batch of PB27 will. Some is very good. Neither pigment is very granulating on their own, so DS probably adds a granulating medium into the mix.
Hi, according to Daniel Smith Website and Tube label this Prussian Green is made with PB27 (Prussian Blue) & PY97 (Hansa Yellow Medium) - they no longer use the PY35 (Cadmium) but switched out to Cadmium Hues using a base of PY53 (toxicity reasons) - fun fact the PY97 (Hansa Yellow Medium) is also used in some of their other colors that use more than one pigment such as Indian Yellow, Naples Yellow, New Gamboge, Olive Green, and Prussian Green. - thank you for watching and sharing your pigment knowledge. Always a joy to find other artist who love the study of color
Bonus: I received this answer from John Cogley (owner and CEO of Daniel Smith) after asking him if they add any granulating medium to the paints: 'The color, opacity, staining and granulation are due to the pigment only. We don’t use any type of granulation medium. The other manner in which our colors granulation is due to several pigments in the same color like Moonglow or the various elements in a natural mineral that causes different specific gravity and therefore granulation. So NO Daniel Smith uses no granulation medium. Thank you Buffy."-- John
It seems like you have a robust audience, so my comment may seem unhelpful (NOT my intention) but it would be very helpful if less of your video screen was the palettes (HALF the screen of the video is filled with palettes!!) and more of a zoom into the part of the artwork you are working on. If you are filming these videos with the intention that they be watched full screen on a larger monitor, the video quality isn't high enough for that, so you might consider bumping that up- I'm watching on the highest HD your video allows and even in the quarter size box on my screen, there's absolutely no definition. I'd love to see more of the nuances of your colors and the way the paint is "dancing", which I think is the real magic of what you do! Just a gentle suggestion- I watch tons of watercolor content, and I'd love to see up closer to how you are working.
I just started offering these live streams on my channel, to film I use an overhead webcam, (webcams will autofocus at times, I think this may be what you are referring to?) I chose to share the palette and ramekins as the color mixing was such an important part of this lesson. Yes, this community is wonderfulI, so happy to share my journey here. Very excited about it, love the interaction and engagement.🩵
I love it .. ..I've been doing abstract pours with watercolor and acrylic inks , love this technique ...thankyou ...
Wonderful!
What an absolutely gorgeous piece of art! Oh, and the video was great too! 😂 Seriously though this was such an informative video and I learned so much that I'm already planning to watch it again. Always love your videos and so appreciate the time you take to share and teach your techniques. Thank you! Oh, I almost forgot I about died when I was closing the video and you popped back up saying you forgot something. 😂 I died laughing, although inside I was screaming NO don't ruin it! Turns out you know what your doing, because it made it look like the light was coming in the room making striations of light. An amazing brush! If anyone who missed the last 2 minutes of the video it's worth going back to watch. 😊
LOVED reading this! Yes the "just one more thing" happens a lot in my paintings lol lol lol - thank you for watching!
